Life has many challenges, and at any moment it has the potential to take you down. Although you can’t control what happens to you, you have the ability to handle your response.
The first thing you can do is pause. When your mind is racing and you are feeling overwhelmed, the main thing that needs to be done is nothing. That’s right. Physically stop whatever you are doing and allow your body to feel and your mind to calm down.
Once you have paused for a moment, the next thing you need to do is focus on relaxing. Take deep breaths, close your eyes, and find a place of peacefulness within you. The idea is to bring your nervous system back down from whatever chaotic state it is in.
When you have reached a place of calm, you are now ready to slowly dissect your issue step by step to come up with a plan. Take your time. Make a list of the things that need to be done, and the things in your control that you can realistically do.
Take that list and follow it step by step. This will help keep you grounded and focused on only the most important tasks. It will prevent you from becoming sidetracked by other noise.
As you begin to complete the things on your list, it will create a sense of relief and progress. The more progress you make, the better you will feel.
If you are at a place where you are unable to get yourself calm, always remember that reaching out to someone you trust is an option. Sometimes all you need is a safe place to speak out your thoughts and process your emotions.
While having a strong support system is very important, it’s also crucial to develop personal coping skills so that when no one is available, you don’t remain stuck.
Find things that you enjoy or that bring nourishment to your mind and spirit. Doing those things during times of stress can help tremendously.
Remember, you have the power and the strength to face life. One day at a time, one choice at a time, one moment at a time.
